I've got a really old pear tree that has loads of pears each year, but they ( and the leaves ) are always covered with black splotches. They bark has lots of green lichen (?) on all year round. Should I just accept that it is old and comming to the end of its useful productiveness - or should i seek to heal it ?

Sounds like rust Hector, I tend to get it on mine, but I spray (after the the flowers have gone, dont want to wipe out the bee's)The pears might not look good but they still taste nice. Have you tried spraying?
