potatoes are nice, cheap and easy to grow for strating out - myself and my neice (13yrs) grew tonnes of radishes last year and she totally loved it - lettuces did amazingly well too - because of the wet weather i think. ive never seen a child so keen to eat sald in all my life! she was so proud.

Hi Rachel
Only joined last week myself. Read your thread about starting veg patch. Have today been putting some veg in myself and I have some leeks & onions left over if you're interested in them? Only trouble is I'm in Tamworth. Don't worry if it's too far I can always squeeze them in somewhere.

Hi, if you havent much space try hanging baskets. I've done a 'red' basket with tumbling toms and strawberries with basil ... yum

Hi Rachel,
So he's not the only one ......... My son (11yrs ) is a really keen cook too - and I have just started my veg patch ! bit chaotic, not like they look in the books - but hey !
Today he had cookery at school - a crumble - the teacher had sent the recepie print out home...." quantity of marg, flour and sugar and a TIN of PIE FILLING !?! - needless to say he went in with 3 sticks of rhubab and some orange rind. The rhubarb plant was given to us by a fellow member - felt good pick that !!
I've got some peas ready to plant out, if you're interested. I also have some different herbs too.
A cheat for chives is to buy the fresh pots from Lidl for something like 70p. Plant them out and they'll do you proud year in year out ..... my son chops them into smashed new potatoes and butter... a la Jamie Oliver.
Let me know if you're interested - i'm over in sutton, but travel about a fair bit if you're not in this area.
Cheers and speak soon LOH
